John Wallace opening date change

John Wallace will be exhibiting his work at Higgins Hall Gallery on the midtown campus from February 17 through March 10. There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday Feb. 17th from 4-7pm.

I will be gallery sitting on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 - 4 beginning on 2/17.
Please stop by to see John's work.

Titled “John Wallace – 60 years of Painting” the exhibition has representative paintings from a decades long artistic career. Although somewhat different in scale and scope, these works show a remarkable consistency in their figuration, use of metaphor, and narrative content:
“…Wallace is nothing if not a consummately sophisticated painter, capable of producing effects which can, and should, be savored for their purely aesthetic qualities. That said, however, it is also true that Wallace…brings to visual art a narrative gift so richly novelistic that one can’t help pondering the possible meanings of his compositions any more than ignore all the subtextual implications in a complex prose passage from Nabakov or Updike. Indeed, Wallace is one of our more intriguing post-modern storytellers…”
Ed McCormack
Gallery & Studio, February 2007

John Wallace received a B.F.A. from Washington University and an M.F.A. from Indiana University. He also studied at Skowhegan, where he received a Margaret Tiffany Blake fellowship for creating a fresco in the choir loft of the South Solon Meeting House, which is now a historic landmark. He is also the recipient of a Huntingdon Hartford Fellowship and a Roswell Museum Fellowship. His work is in museums and significant private collections. From 1982 thru 2009 he taught at Western Connecticut State University where he was co-coordinator of the M.F.A. program from 2000 thru 2009.

Alberetti collage workshop

COLLAGE WORKSHOP – Two days- April 9 and 10 10AM-4PM
Welcome again to the Alberetti’s Collage Workshop.
This spring we will once again present collage, transfer techniques and then add egg tempera as an accent to the traditional techniques.
And once again we will explore subject matter ranging from landscape, to still life, to cityscape, or create a portrait, or an abstract piece, or any subject of your choosing.

Emphasis will be given to technique, composition, contrast, and color relationships. An investigation of collage through a series of exercises will develop the artist's awareness and potential of this unique art form. We will provide the basic materials but encourage you to bring your favorite tools or materials. You are encouraged to bring, or send ahead, some digital photos you might like to include in your work.

The two-day workshop fee is $180 per person. We ask that you register and send half the fee by March 9th Please note we are limiting the class size to 10.
We are very excited about this April workshop and look forward to you taking part in it. Please call 203-746-1321, or reply to maryloualberetti@mac.com to register, or to Alberetti

Call for Artists HVCA

Creative Challenge for the United Way

A Unique project for respected nonprofit: Seeking an illustrator who can create 5-6 illustrations for a brief story about two children. We are looking for a very whimsical line drawing style. The illustrations will be a part of United Way of Western Connecticut's 2010 annual report, so the timeline is tight (design needs to be completed by mid-Feb.) Stipend of $200 available. Collaborative work with United Way staff and graphic designer, who will carry design theme throughout the report. Credit will be given to artist in report, and mailed to major donors in March.

Samples should depict your interpretation of the following:

Once upon a time, there was a little girl and boy. Their parents were very wealthy and had always given them everything they wanted. In fact, they had never left the castle where they lived because they were told the world was a dangerous place, and no one could be trusted. One day while playing in the courtyard, a sound caught their attention outside the gates. Curious, they cautiously stepped out of their protected yard and into the big world.
Guidelines.....

Open to all artists, first come, first served.

HVCA members are given first priority

Deadline for submission Friday, January 21st 11:59 PM or when an artist is selected for the project, whichever comes first

A quick turn around is a must

Electronic submissions only

If interested, please do the following:

* Send an artist statement (no more than 100 words)
* Send up to 3 jpeg images of a sample of your work
* Email the above and write ATTN: United Way Illustrations

More details will be provided to the selected artists.

Missy Sheldrake writes, "This month I'll be heading over to Tiny Toes Dance Academy to work on my next in a series of murals, this time for the reception area. I had so much fun there back in September that I'm really looking forward to this project! Check out the gallery here, and check out Tiny Toes if you've got a little one whose toes can't stop tapping.

I'm also really excited about my recent collaborative efforts with Rocknoceros. We're working together to publish a book that will accompany their next album, which I'll be exclusively illustrating. Both the book and the album are due for release later this year.

2011 is promising to be filled with adventure and magic. I hope to see you along the way! :)" Check out Missy's website to see more of her murals. www.muralsbymissy.com/gallery.html
