Gulgun Aliriza MFA '07
Click here to see pictures from the opening Day of Gulgon's reception at the Silo.
From the NewsTimes 6/11/2011:
Gulgun Aliriza created this oil on masonite, which will be on display in the New Milford show. She calls it “2B Red.” As to what it’s all about, she said, “When people look at my paintings, questions arise. It’s an inside/outside kind of feeling. I like the idea of showing but not showing. I like to be a little mysterious.” Photo: Contributed Photo / The News-Times Contributed
Four artists with a common bond will exhibit their works in a new show at the Silo Gallery in New Milford this weekend. You can meet them Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the opening reception
The artists are Brian Adgate, Gulgun Aliriza, Will Lustenader and Jessica Halliday. They all create their pieces either directly or indirectly from nature -- representing figures, landscapes and still life -- but each with a unique twist.
That's why Silo Gallery director Valerie Culbertson brought them together for this joint show.
Aliriza is a native of Cyprus who earned her master's in fine arts degree at Western Connecticut State University. She creates compositions from complex still arrangements, focusing on life and objects in her immediate surroundings.
"My work appears more like exercises in picture-making than revelations about a place or thing," Aliriza said.
"2B Red" is the name of one of her paintings in the exhibit. The colorful artwork includes a clown puppet off to one side. Aliriza said while some people find it scary and others love it, the puppet wasn't the focus of the piece.
Click here to read the rest of the article.
The opening reception will be Saturday, June 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Silo Gallery, Hunt Hill Farm, 44 Upland Road, New Milford. Wines from Hopkins Vineyard and appetizers by chef Mary Kravec, the Silo Cooking School's director, will be served. Admission is free. For more details call 860-355-0300 or visit www.hunthillfarmtrust.org.

Cathy Vanaria
Catherine Vanaria, WCSU photography professor and Danbury small business owner, who spent time during the summer of 2010 photographing a hat collection at the Danbury Museum & Historical Society Authority . Her work inspired an exhibit being displayed at the museum through October 15, 2011. The exhibit can be viewed on at the museum on Main Street in Danbury Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.
“Once we viewed Cathy's exceptional photographs, we knew that the women’s hat collection had to be seen by the public. These hats are works of art,” stated Executive Director, Brigid Guertin.
Over 300 ladies hats from the museum collection will showcase hat design from the colonial period through the mid-20th century. The exhibit includes highly entertaining wall of historic newspaper advertisements and city directory listings related to the millinery trade in Danbury. Vintage photos and antique postcards from museum archives illustrate styles and trends.
Joretta Kilcourse, museum docent and volunteer crafted a special ‘Magnificent Millinery Quilt’ featuring Vanaria’s photos of some of the finest hats in the collection. The winning ticket for this fundraising raffle will be drawn at the close of the exhibit on October 15, 2011.

Eileen writes, "2011 has been a very busy artistic year so far. In January I was awarded an Artist Residency at Vermont Studio Center. It was a magical place with incredible artists in attendance that made for a very productive time there.
A couple paintings created in VT were included in our MFA Thesis Show; a woodblock print I created there was accepted into a juried exhibition that was shown at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art in Kyoto, Japan, 6th KIWA Exhibition: "Enjoy the Forest of the World Wood Print" at the end of March and will be at The First International Moku Hanga Conference shown at Gallery Keifu in Kyoto, Japan in June.
The print, which was made into a kite by a very talented kite builder, will also be at two galleries in Seattle WA later this year and possibly off to Mexico.
I once again participated in the Annual Spring Show: "Brush With Nature" with my Chinese Brush Paintings at the Hammond Museum in North Salem, NY (show is currently up until June 18th).
One of my oil paintings was accepted into the 4th National Juried Exhibition at Prince Street Gallery, NY, NY by Juror: William Bailey.
The weekend after graduation I participated in Weir Farm's exceptional workshop with Dmitri Wright for the third time - I would encourage all interested parties to plan to participate in future workshops that are expected to run each Season.
Can't wait to see what the second half of the year has in store for me!"
