Western Connecticut State University professors cheered the news Tuesday that the long-awaited Visual and Performing Arts Center has been granted state funding, with construction expected to begin this fall. article by Eileen Fitzgerald

WestConn President James Schmotter learned Tuesday morning that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has approved bonding for the $80 million building, which has been on the university's wish list for 20 years and in planning for about eight.

Schmotter said he understood it was one of two "shovel-ready" projects in the Connecticut State University System that received Malloy's go-ahead.

Joel writes, "I was selected as one of the finalists in the 2011 International Portrait Competition hosted by the Portrait Society of America."

The congratulations announcement states, "Over the last thirteen years this competition has grown to become one of most prestigious events in the field of portraiture today; and we are pleased to have the space to invite the top twenty finalist this year. With over 1,750 images entered, selecting a limited number was a challenging undertaking. Your work, O. Aldon James , was selected based on skill and technique, as well as aesthetic and emotional content."

Join the Tarrywile Park Authority in partnership with Polley Creates for the Second Annual Plein Air Festival. Tuesday thru Friday, Plein Air artists will be painting throughout the Park. Artists will be on the property from May 31st to June 3rd, with participants meeting at the Red Barn Environmental Center on Tuesday at 10:00 am for a welcome and tour. Once signed up, each artist will receive a schedule of events and support material, regardless of when you paint. Tonight Free Portrait Demonstration

Using the live model, Alain will demonstrate a pastel portrait from start to finish. Throughout the process, Alain will explain his simple approach to portrait painting which emphasizes relationships of shapes, values, and edges. Jessica Bartlett MFA '09 writes, "Tracy Powers and I (both from class of 09) are members of First Street Gallery and we are moving to the second floor into a huge space on the second floor W 26th street right over Robert Miller Gallery. The new space is significantly larger than their current gallery, with 18 ft ceilings and floor to ceiling windows overlooking W 26th street.

Ival Stratford Kovner MFA '02

Ival writes, "Stowe, Vermont Weekend of Hope - cancer survivors & their families is offering my “Expressing Yourself Through Watercolor, Finding Harmony”” to the schedule on Saturday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stoweflake Resort. It is a 1.5 hours session, offered as an extended session."

Ival will be showing at the Blue Mountain Gallery, solo exhibition August 1 - 20, 2011 reception August 4th during First Chelsea Thursdays.

She adds, "My drawings of the horse guard will be displayed and the title will be "Horse Drawn". The new Broadway production called "War Horse" also concerns the cavalry. Currently the horse guard may be eliminated due to budget considerations in Hartford. I will offer prints of my work to raise funds this Summer. I was a trooper for two years
and served as the 2GHG Historian in 2009. My show will also include poems and drill songs that I have written while serving in the guard."

Every year the Bowery Gallery hosts a juried show open to all applicants working in two-dimensional media. In the past, prominent artists have juried the shows.

The Bowery's 20th annual juried competition for 2011 will be juried by the painter Stanley Lewis. The juried exhibition will be held from August 2 - 20, 2011 at the Bowery Gallery.

All applications should be postmarked by April 15, 2011.

This is an opportunity to bring family members and friends together to let go and be creative! Big Brush painting will satisfy the needs of parents, grandparents, children and friends (you don’t need to be related and can come with or without a child). The inspiration of children in this workshop will empower the rest of us to follow the natural ability of the young to be free and to create effortlessly and fearlessly. All ages are welcome to experience the joy of discovering the secrets of uncovering your creativity. The school will provide all materials except your big brush (2” flat brush from hardware store or WalMart or art supply store, etc.).
